How we Started as a Branch

MOHWA Minnesota is one of the youngest chapters of MOHWA Global USA, born of a conversation in January 2023, when Dr. Ma Rose Eyong reached out to 13 women about starting a branch in Minnesota. After some back-and-forth encouragement, the group decided to go for it, and on May 18th, 2024, we officially launched with 12 members, while funding everything ourselves, from the hall and food to our uniforms and drinks. The timing couldn't have been more fitting, as MOHWA's name received its official patent just two days before our launch, making the celebration even more meaningful.

Our chapter was welcomed into the association by former National Vice President Ma Irene Agbor-Tabi and President Emerita Ma Ayuk Bakia-Parker, who spoke about the values and goals of MOHWA before cutting the ribbon to mark the chapter's formal acceptance into the sisterhood.

The chapter’s launch also included many Monikim practice sessions in the lead-up, giving the chapter a chance to showcase our Manyu culture to the Minnesota community and pass it on to our children, who were very much a part of the celebration. It was a strong foundation to build from, and the chapter has carried that same energy ever since.

From the start, MOHWA MN has been defined by unity, love, and a deep commitment to one another and to the broader Minnesota community. On February 7th, 2026, Ma Beltha Tameh stepped up from Vice President to assume the presidency after the inaugural president, Ma Rose Eyong, stepped down. Ma Beltha Tameh brought in a dedicated leadership team: Ma Kerenge Ako-Ebot Enow as Vice President, Ma Mbeng Bakia-Chick as Secretary (a role she has held since the chapter's very first day ), Ma Heldrine Mbu as Treasurer (also a founding fixture in that seat), Ma Esther Agbor as Media Representative, and Ma Sarah Etta representing the chapter on the admissions committee.

As the Chapter President, "I am truly humbled and thankful to my MN Queens for giving me the opportunity to serve as MOHWA Global MN Branch President. Thank you, my Queen Mothers and sisters, for believing in me and encouraging me each step of the way." MOHWA women are deeply involved in the Minnesota community, and our visibility and activities are attracting new members. As a chapter, our mantra is, "Each One Teach One, Each One Reach One," says it all: together, we will accomplish the work we initiated by carrying Manyu culture forward and building something lasting in the Minnesota community at large.
